Again, I’ll try to make this really brief for several reasons.
One, I just got in from the gym and need to wash my ass.
Two, I am going to see my parents for the Thanksgiving break and I have yet to pack (but suppose to be leaving at three).
And three, eh…..
I am extremely happy that Barack Obama won the presidency. It means so many things for so many people. Usually when someone utters a statement similar to that, people assume that they mean for Blacks.
But to me, it’s about much more than that.
While I do understand the world’s fascination with something ‘new’ and different, what I don’t understand is America’s newly vested interest in learning about all things Black. We’ve been in this damn country for hundreds of years and NOW you find it necessary to give us a once over and see what’s really going on?
I object.
There was a special done a few weeks ago entitled Being Black in America where they (insert: Media) attempted to examine everything from race relations WITHIN the black community on down to stereotypes that bind us. Again I ask…for what? Why give a damn about these things now? Of all the things presented, the Obama’s represented NONE of them…so what exactly were you trying to imply?
More recently, Newsweek released an issue of their magazine called “The Meaning of Michelle.” For what? Why is it that everything about blacks is now being scrutinized or placed under the view of a microscope in an effort to understand? This concern should’ve been shown years ago…not when we elected a half black president. Besides, I don’t recall any news publication doing an article examining any other first lady. I guess all of this is in an effort to ‘soften the blow’ of having a black woman living in the “White House.”
All of this reminds me of a girl that I use to be friends with. She was white and told me that her mother didn’t like any blacks, EXCEPT Oprah. She said that Oprah was ‘different’ from other blacks and didn’t seem like the average in America. I laughed b/c the only reason why Oprah isn’t average to me is b/c of her bank account. Other than that, she’s a black woman who puts her pants on one leg at a time just like the rest of us. This thing with the Obamas parallels this ‘Oprah-is-the-prototype’ theory in that it seems that white America/news media had absolutely NO interest in what it meant to be black in America UNTIL the NEW prototype stepped up and won the presidency. I think that it’s pathetic and highly telling of what our country is all about.
We’ve been here for hundreds of years…we’ve always had and always WILL HAVE history. Don’t pretend to have interest now that it’s really been put in your face.
That type of concern is not needed.
COMMENTS
It’s kind of a lose/lose at this point. They can either attempt to ignore us as one of our brightest runs the country OR attempt to play a horrible game of catch up.
At least the younger generations aren’t so lost racially.
