Talking Shit About “Professionals”

This is a minor rant that I had to get off my chest. My frustrations runneth over so I’m gonna talk about it.

Alright, I started MissJia.com in June of this year. About a month in, I received an email from a company called Eplay who offered to create a widget on my site so that I could offer polls. They stated that they would design the poll, offering me a minimum of 6 different mock up designs to choose from so that I could offer my readers “polls” at no cost. I asked them what the catch was…they said that they offered it to sites that they felt had the popularity to get their name out. I should’ve known it was bullshit on sight b/c I had JUST started my site, so they were obviously blowing smoke up my ass about the popular stuff. But also, I still didn’t understand how offering me (and several other blogs) a free poll would boost any business for them. Wouldn’t people want that freebie like the rest of us?

So anyway, after I decided on the design that I wanted, they asked me to insert a scripting code into my site and it would automatically get the polls going. I figured, no harm, no foul and did it. I immediately started using it and found a major flaw in it after the 2nd use. When I inserted the 2nd poll into a blog, the 1st poll BECAME the second poll. Let me explain…lets say that my first poll was about shoes being hot or not. The 2nd poll was about Rihanna’s hair being hot or not. The first poll about shoes automatically “became” the same poll as the second without me changing it. So I found that I had to go through and delete any previous polls so that they didn’t match my new poll.

Fast forward to NOW…my site was running slow as hell. I couldn’t figure out for the life of me WHY this was happening but my site’s host suggested that I move to a dedicated server b/c of the amount of traffic I had been receiving. I accepted that as truth and started pricing different hosts. Either or, I STILL wasn’t totally buying that that was the only reason why my site was moving slow.

So then I received a message on Twitter from a fellow blogger asking me if I was still using the Eplay widget on my site and if so, I should remove it b/c it has been giving several others site issues. I go into the site, remove the script and low and fucking behold, my site is running as it should be. No issues whatsoever.

Out of curiosity, I go to the eplay website, just to see if there had been any type of bugs reported by other users and do you know that the whole site is DOWN? I was ready to go off but instead, I wrote the contact that I had on file an email.

Here’s my thing…when they first contacted me, they spent the better half of a several weeks trying to get me to decide on a widget and subsequently use one. I’m talking emails out the ass, ALL day, everyday. So I finally decide to use it, THEY fuck up…and couldn’t even give a courtesy email saying “Hey, our widget is having issues,” or “Yea bitch, we’re shutting down the site. But thanks for using our shit.” Something? ANYTHING?

Now I know that this blog entry is quite the opposite but I must go back to the whole idea of professionalism when you approach others and rep your company. People talk and remember things. That’s fact. Had I not had someone reach out to me and tell ME about the fuck ups of another company, I would’ve never known. And quite frankly, it wasn’t that person’s job to inform me of site issues pertaining to ANOTHER person’s business. But because he did, I immediately asked the company to make sure that they remove me from any future offers or mailings because they messed up MY site by not maintaining a certain level of professionalism regarding their product.

Yes, it’s fixed now and all is well. I just needed to get that off my chest.
